6 RBI Effort From Newman Highlights PaddleHeads Win
Boise, ID- Offensive success in the early innings has been a big factor for the Missoula PaddleHeads in action opposite the Boise Hawks this week. In game 2 from Memorial Stadium on Saturday night that trend would continue thanks in large part to Jayson Newman.
Missoula would jump on Boise in the first three innings taking an 6-1 advantage in that stretch. After the top of the sixth, the PaddleHeads would also be well out in front leading 11-1. That would prove to be plenty of offensive support for the PaddleHeads bullpen coming to the finish line as they would once again hold off the Hawks down the stretch in an 11-5 win.
Missoula would see the first 3 batters of the third inning reach to start things out, setting things up for the Pioneer League home run king Jayson Newman. Newman would come through in the situation, sending a line drive out of the yard in right to bring everyone home on a grand slam to make the score 6-1. This would prove to set the tone for the rest of the night as the PaddleHeads advantage would only grow larger.
Success with 2-outs would see the PaddleHeads grow their advantage to 10 thanks to a 4 run rally. Singles from Brandon Riley, and Keaton Greenwalt would start the party with 2-outs driving in a pair of runs. Newman would then strike again with a 2-run single of his own to bring his RBI total in the game to 6. Greenwalt, and Newman would both finish the night 2-for-5 while Riley was 1-for-3.
Newman has been on a torrid pace this week opposite the Hawks recording at least one RBI in his last 4 games. In that stretch Newman has impressively recorded 13 RBI combined. In the process, the Southern California native brought his RBI total on the season to 102 which leads the Pioneer League.
Boise found their only sustained offensive success in the bottom of the sixth on a pair home runs from Juan Teixeira, and Raymond Gill that made the score 11-5. This proved to only be a bump in the road for the PaddleHeads however as the bullpen would shut things down the rest of the way. Gill finished the night 2-for-4 and Teixeira was 1-for-4.
Nathan Alexander, Dan Swain, and Tyler Elliot made sure the Hawks would have no chance at mounting a comeback down the stretch in the final 3 ⅓ innings. The trio would only allow 1 hit in that stretch. Swain, and Elliot would record 5 strikeouts combined in the final 2 innings to ensure the PaddleHeads would once again walk away with a win..
